Croatia introduces free-flow toll system

by Florian König, maut1.de – 30 September 2025

Croatia is fundamentally modernising its motorway toll system. After the 2026 summer season, or by the last quarter of 2026 at the latest, the country will switch from traditional toll stations with barriers and cash payments to a digital free-flow system.

For motorists, this means no more waiting times, cashless payment and comfortable travel. With the toll box from maut1.de, you are well prepared.

Innovation: Abolition of cash payments as a legal change

Cash payments abolished

The new law completely abolishes cash payments at toll stations. Tolls can only be paid electronically.

Uniform electronic system for the whole of Croatia

The new system combines various payment options: credit card, app, partner locations or toll box. Anyone who cannot present a valid electronic ticket will face fines – even in the case of unintentional non-payment.

How does the new free-flow system in Croatia work?

  • Automatic number plate recognition (ALPR): Vehicles are automatically recorded.
  • Microwave communication at 5.8 GHz: Supports technical recording.  nbsp;
  • Toll box (‘ENC device’): mandatory in lorries and buses, optional for cars and motorcycles.

Advantages for travellers and holidaymakers

🚗 Less congestion, more throughput

Traditional toll stations can handle around 200 vehicles per hour. The new system can handle up to 3,000 vehicles per hour – a major advantage during the holiday season.

💳 Digital payment & convenience

  • Billing via number plate or toll box
  • Credit card, apps or partner locations can be used
  • No cash, no change, no delays

⚠️ Strict rules & fines

Anyone who is not correctly registered risks an increased toll charge in accordance with the general terms and conditions of the Croatian toll operators.
